Dr MK Bhan, the Secretary to the Govenment of India Department of Biotechnology within the Government of India, and his delegation visited the APF today following a seminar at ANU where Dr Bhan talked about India's effort at building excellence in life science.
Dr Bhan has served as Secretary since 2004 and in this capacity, he has guided the Government of India's growing expenditure on research and research infrastructure and overseen significant policy reforms such as strengthening support for international collaboration, bolstering India's research workforce and supporting greater linkages between publicly funded researchers and industry.
Dr Bhan is also co-chair of the Indo-Australian Biotechnology Fund, a component of the Australia-India Strategic Research Fund - Australia's largest bilateral fund for science with any country and one of India's largest sources of support for international science.
The delegation from India were very interested in the work of APF. Discussions as to ways we can work with the research community in India and facilitate collaborative activity were held with a view to follow up meetings over the next six months. The group finished the visit with a tour of the building including the labs and mouse rooms.
